Entre os shows da Vertigo Tour em São Paulo e Santiago, o U2 assistiu o carnaval de Salvador como convidados de Gilberto Gil. Ivete Sangalo, cantando em cima de um caminhão, persuade Bono, Edge e Gil para sair para a varanda da residência do baiano e cantar Vertigo com ela para a multidão na rua. Bono, em seguida, tenta cantar alguns trechos da canção de Ivete, "Chupa toda". Mais tarde, Bono e Gil cantam uma canção de Bob Marley.

Between their Vertigo Tour concerts in Sao Paulo and Santiago, U2 attend Carnival in Salvador as guests of Brazilian pop star Gilberto Gil. During the celebrations, bands play atop trucks in the street. Ivete Sangalo, performing atop a truck, coaxes Bono, Edge, and Gil to come out onto the balcony of Gil’s residence and sing Vertigo with her for the large crowd in the street. They get microphones and sing. Bono then tries to sing some of Ivete’s song Chupa Toda with her. Later, Bono and Gil perform a Bob Marley cover popular in Brazil via Gil’s own version of it. U2 toca e é entrevistado no programa Le Grand Journal. Esta é a primeira aparição ao vivo da banda na TV francesa. Eles haviam considerado gravar Magnificent para transmissão, em uma data posterior, mas no final optaram por "Breathe", a fim de deixar a entrevista ao vivo no tempo.

U2 perform and are interviewed on the programme Le Grand Journal. This is their first live appearance on French TV. The band had considered taping Magnificent for broadcast at a later date, but in the end had to depart after Breathe in order to make it to a live radio interview on time. (U2 Gigs)
